The project will be based at Trinity College in Dublin, and equipped with capital of €5 million ($5.9 million) to conduct research in fintech, with a particular focus on blockchain, digital payments, and the use of emerging technology in retail and wholesale banking and insurance. Pascal Donohoe, Ireland’s minister for finance, says he hopes the project will spur collaboration between academic institutions and the fintech industry. Fintech funding in Ireland dropped 9% to $453 million in H1 2018, marking its first drop since 2011. As such, this new project was likely introduced to boost domestic fintech development, and with the UK leaving the European Union next year, Ireland may have a chance to attract more fintechs to set up their base in the country.
