WIRECARD TAPS VISA FOR PAYMENT WRISTBANDS: Major European processor Wirecard announced it has partnered with German digital bank Comdirect and Visa to distribute payment wristbands at the 2018 German Beach Volleyball Championships. Wirecard plans to give out roughly 5,000 wristbands during the three-day event later this month. This builds on its push into the wearable payments space — it announced a partnership with Mastercard last month to add Wirecard’s digital payment app to Garmin Pay, Garmin’s wearable payment platform, for example. And for Visa, partnering for the event indicates that it values major events as an opportunity to test wearable payment options. Visa has worked with wearable and contactless payments at the two most recent Olympic Games. And early last month, the network reported successful results from issuing its payment wearables at the World Cup, selling 6,500 payment rings and 30,000 payment wristbands. As consumers become more attuned to and interested in wearable payments, sporting events could continue to be an effective avenue through which Visa alerts consumers of its contactless payment technology, which could increase customer familiarity with contactless payments and entice those customers to buy permanent options.
